The Fashionable Electronic Cigarette
The fact that the electronic cigarette has seen a striking increase in popularity in the last year is no secret. A wide range of reasons for the heightened public interest in this relatively new innovation includes everything from their apparent long term economy compared to their traditional tobacco counterparts to the advertised lower toxicity of inhaling nicotine-laced or nicotine-free water vapor over the notoriously chemical-rich smoke of burning tobacco.
Most notably, however, the success of electronic cigarettes weighs heavily on the fact that electronic cigarettes have become fashionable in the last year because of their increased media attention; and the emergence of their regular usage in high-class parties and by recognized celebrities. Most notable of this is Katherine Heigl, who made headlines with her appearance on David Letterman’s Late Night Show in September 2010 very visibly smoking an electronic cigarette and commenting on their safety.
Heigl, during the show, remarked while sharing the electronic cigarette with David Letterman himself, “You blow out water vapor so you're not harming anyone around you and you're not harming yourself. I'm essentially humidifying the space.” Heigl’s remark has since become one of the most commonly used arguments by manufacturers and users in supporting the use of the device.
Hollywood stars, however, had begun espousing usage of the electronic cigarettes long before Heigl’s e-cigarette sharing talk show appearance. Leonardo DiCaprio, for example, was photographed smoking an electronic cigarette while riding a bike through New York City in March 2009 – which sparked controversy around the actor’s very public e-cigarette smoking habit until the stigma concerning the device was lifted by Heigl’s remarks.
Since then, more and more Hollywood celebrities have been spotted in public smoking electronic cigarettes, many of whom have attested to their convenience over traditional cigarettes especially when attending industry parties, because the vapor from the device is not seen as offensive and their users no longer have to resort to stepping outside for a quick nicotine fix. Socialites and supermodels like Paris Hilton and Kate Moss have been spotted using electronic cigarettes at such events.
Electronic cigarettes have also appeared in at least one major Hollywood motion picture feature. The movie The Tourist, which opened in December 2010, included scenes with Johnny Depp using an electronic cigarette, one such sequence also occurring on a train – a luxury that is afforded to e-cigarette users even in real life as little or no legislation currently exists restricting their use in public.
This newfound fashionability of electronic cigarettes has been a big boon to the electronic cigarette industry, which has exploded into one of the most competitive new markets with dozens of new companies all trying to make their way to the forefront – most approaching the situation by setting up their business online.
There is little doubt that this upward trend in the popularity of electronic cigarettes will continue. With their affordability, ease of usage, and their lower toxicity compared to traditional tobacco products, making the switch was an easy choice for professionals, high-class socialites, and the Hollywood elite – the same can be true for you!
